We are non-religious Christians. We believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, three in One. We don’t believe any one denomination is better than another because humans make denominations and they are all therefore subject to human flaws. God says we are His church. We still attend church though. Ok, I think I know what you are saying to this. What makes you non-religious? You still go to church, read the bible and pray a lot. That’s a fair question. Let us try to answer in this way:
Religious people supposedly don’t smoke, gamble, drink, swear, try to be goody two shoes, judge others by how they conduct themselves (in public at least)….basically don’t have fun and don’t smile very much.
Well, we do have fun! It’s true we don’t smoke, gamble or swear (ok, once in a while something slips out) but these are personal choices we make to live a life that honors God.
Many people confuse the word Christian with being a good person and doing good deeds, going to church, or having parents that went to church and called themselves Christians and so by growing up in that house, they are Christian too. Some people think one can be a Christian and still believe there are many ways to God. Though this statement is politically correct in today’s culture, it does not agree with what Jesus says in the bible. If it were true, then it would make Jesus the biggest liar throughout the history of the world or the greatest lunatic ever lived. How many people do you know who would follow for life, the teachings of that kind of a liar or lunatic? Did you ever wonder where the word “Christian” came from? Christianity is a personal relationship with God based on faith, through Jesus Christ (hence the word CHRISTian). Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father (GOD) except through me.” This means that we must believe in our hearts that Jesus is the only way to this personal relationship through His life, death and resurrection. You may ask, why did Jesus have to die for this? God is a perfect God but a just God too. To be in relationship with God, you must be as He is – perfect (spiritually). We don’t know about you but we’re not perfect (and we don’t know of anyone who is), so we have a big problem. We constantly make mistakes that God would not approve of (it’s called a sin nature, acting independently out of God’s will). God’s just penalty for sin is death. God knew we would have this problem since He first gave Adam and Eve the choice to accept Him or reject Him. Jesus, His Son, who is perfect, stepped in and took our place – each and every one of us, so we could have forgiveness by God of this nature. By Jesus dying in his perfection, justice was served. When God looks at us, he sees only His Son’s perfection, and therefore our relationship to God is restored to what it was supposed to be. It’s like a cool perfection filter.
This personal relationship is a free gift to everyone who asks for it. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life”. To receive a gift, it must be accepted and you cannot buy it from the person who is doing the giving. Just like accepting a gift, we must accept Jesus’ work on the cross and His resurrection as the only way to God and eternal life. All you have to do is tell God you accept this gift and believe it in your heart. Let God do the rest through His Spirit. If you really believe, you will find that your life will have a new start and your perspective will be different. Some things will be easier and some things will be more difficult. The difference is that you have God’s Spirit working in you to guide and lead you in making decisions about all kinds of stuff. He loves you and you can always talk to Him (pray) and get His perspective. After all, He created you and knows you better than you will ever know yourself. To begin this relationship is as easy as saying (and meaning) the following to God,
“Hi God. I know that things aren’t right between us right now but I want this to be different. I’ve been living my life independently of You, and I want to turn that around. I know I can’t live this life right by myself no matter how hard I try to be good and I cannot work my way into favor with you. God, I believe that your son Jesus Christ is the only way to a relationship with you. I believe that He died to pay the price for my sins, and then came back to life so I also can have eternal life and a relationship with you. I now accept this free gift of eternal life and personal relationship with you. Please come into my life and take over the steering wheel because You know what’s best for me and that you have a better plan than mine. Thanks for this gift. Amen”
If you said that to God and mean it, you have begun a restored relationship with God (a.k.a. becoming a Christian). What you just did was pray (you talked to God directly) and you can do this anytime, anywhere and God will listen and answer you. Congratulations on your new relationship with God! We’d be thrilled if you call or email us so that we can pray with you and give you some suggestions on how to grow in your new relationship with God.
